To an outsider, the rituals of a dojo might seem strange. Bowing to an empty room? Shouting "Osu"? But these traditions are the glue that holds the martial arts community together, creating a safe space for growth.
Respect for the Space
Bowing when entering the dojo is a sign of leaving your ego and your daily problems at the door. It signals a shift in mindset: "I am here to learn. I am here to work." It creates a sanctuary where the outside world can't intrude.
Respect for Each Other
Martial arts involves physical contact. To practice safely, there must be a high level of trust. Bowing to your partner is a promise: "I will train hard with you, but I will not hurt you." It establishes a bond of mutual respect and care.
Discipline and Gratitude
Etiquette teaches us to be mindful of our actions and grateful for the instruction we receive. It reminds us that we are part of a lineage and a community that is bigger than ourselves.
